crater lake

Growing up in Oregon, we have enjoyed viewing this majestic body of water many times, but typically only for a couple of hours at a time.  It is Oregon's only National Park!  The photos featured are a mix of Tyler's and some from an iPhone.

SEE/ DO

  • Our favorite view is at the top of the Garfield Peak Trail, which is the path to the right of the lodge, where the pavement stops

  • There are a ton of hikes to choose from

  • Check out the lake from the different overlooks

  • Check out the historic lodge, visitor center, and the gift shop has nice quality items, not just junk!

  • Take photos - even our old disposable film cameras from my childhood took great pictures of this lake.  You really can't take a bad picture here.

EAT

  • We recommend packing a picnic to enjoy the lake from the rim.  We like sitting on the concrete short rim wall, facing the water.

  • There is a lodge restaurant, but we've never tried it.

STAY

  • We have never stayed here overnight, but there is a lodge right at the rim of the lake.

  • We recommend planning a stop here when you are traveling through Oregon, as there aren't any great destination spots right near here.

Tips

  • It can be difficult to get here when there is a lot of snow (this is a high elevation spot).  Roads were closed one year when we tried to bring a visiting family member here in early July!  However, I do know there is snowshoeing around the rim, so there has to be times when you can get there for a snowy experience.

  • Dogs are allowed at the paved Rim Village, but they aren't allowed on the trails.  I wouldn't plan on bringing your dogs if you can help it, but if you are traveling through, it is great that you can still come here even with dogs in tow!
